Joint haemodialysis venture secures first patient

Middlesex, England
Lincolnshire, IL

The Oxford Kidney Unit at the Churchill, part of the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust, has successfully completed a week of daily home dialysis treatment using the Aksys Personal Haemodialysis (PHD®) System. "We are very excited that we may be able to provide this efficient method of daily haemodialysis for our patients," stated Dr. Philip Mason, a consultant at the Oxford Kidney Unit.

Home haemodialysis performed three times a week has been available in the United Kingdom for over thirty years and has recently been endorsed by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE). Daily dialysis is a refinement of this original technique. Studies in the United States and Europe have shown that this daily and home performed haemodialysis is technically superior and offers improved quality of life to patients. Once patients have completed training at the clinic, they continue their daily regimen in their own homes. It is hoped that this technique will be available to the patients for whom it is suitable at the same cost as standard thrice weekly home haemodialysis which is already funded by the United Kingdom National Health System.

The PHD is manufactured by Aksys, Ltd. (NASDAQ: AKSY), located in Lincolnshire, Illinois. Bill Dow, President and CEO stated, "The UK market offers a significant opportunity to work with outstanding institutions like Churchill Hospital." He went on to say, "Kimal plc of Middlesex, England, a distributor of renal products, is an integral part of the team providing technical and clinical support for the PHD in the UK."

Alan Press, Kimal's Group Managing Director stated, "We are pleased to be able to work both with the Churchill Hospital and Aksys in providing daily haemodialysis which can significantly address the cost and health care issues associated with kidney failure."

New Global Logistics Centre - A Solution for the Future

Today, Duncan Eaton, Chief Executive of the NHS Purchasing & Supply Agency formally opened our new Global Logistics Centre in Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire.

The new centre situated only a matter of miles from our manufacturing plant in Bromsgrove is the new central location for Kimal product distribution to its UK and International customers.

The operation covers an area of 3,450 sqm with a capacity to extend by a further 1,000 sqm. Commenting during the celebratory luncheon, Kimal MD Mr Alan Press said,

" …..Kimal is in a continuous change situation and whilst change can be difficult, it also brings with it the excitement of improved capabilities. Standing still and relying on last year's solutions is a route to failure. No longer is there safety in the status quo - in trying to do business as usual. We must look forward and put in place solutions to next year's challenges and our Droitwich logistics Centre is just that. A solution for Kimal's future."

During his speech Mr Press also thanked his co-director Mr Tim Proger for project managing the Droitwich project from start to finish, gave recognition to all other staff involved in Droitwich and welcomed all the guests to the opening.
